44 Young Architects 2007 was based on the publication a+ and featured the early built works of 44 young international architects. The seven professional teams resident in Catalonia —BB Arquitectes, Calderón-Folch Arquitectes, (casa), dos punts arquitectura, lagula arquitectes, ON_A and Re- Arquitectos— were invited to make an extended presentation of their work, in the form of an exhibition, and to take part in the public debates.
The inaugural event in Barcelona on the 17th of October opened a debate among architects and artists which centred on two core ideas. The first was about the way the adjective ‘young’ functions in architecture: when does one stop being a young architect? what does ‘young’ mean in architecture? This is a question that has also affected and been debated at length in the realm of the visual arts. Secondly there was a discussion of the idea of the Barcelona ‘brand’ — a brand that has been utilized to a very considerable extent in architecture, and served here as a basis for reflection on how useful it may be in the field of contemporary art.
Then, from the 19th to the 23rd of October, the seven studios based in Catalonia —Calderon-Folch Arquitectes, (casa), dos punts arquitectura, BB Arquitectes, lagula arquitectes, On_A and Re-Arquitectos— plus Estudio Hauser from Buenos Aires presented their projects, in dialogue with the artists Rubén Martínez, Martí Anson and Octavi Comerón. On this occasion the debate centred on different questions, such as ways of working, the production process and the presence of a social and public commitment.
The ultimate purpose of the final session of the workshops was to discuss various issues common to these two fields of art and architecture, issues that in recent years have given rise to numerous points of encounter.
